Ice caves on Mars: Hoarfrost and microclimates

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Caves on planet Mars could potentially contain water ice deposits. Here, the physical processes responsible for growth and preservation of spelean formations are assessed. Martian caves situated in environments where phase transitions only by sublimation. The predominant type cave is expected to be perennial hoarfrost that slowly grows supersaturated cavities. role microclimates maintaining bodies evaluated comparatively. Free forced convection transport less sensible heat than denser terrestrial atmosphere. Cooling through sublimation also far weaker caves. Hence, cooling deposits flow cave, often a crucial factor caves, insignificant Mars, which limits geographic extent can expected.

Do ice caves exist on Mars?

We have developed a numerical model for assessing the lifetime of ice deposits in martian caves that are open to the atmosphere. Our model results and sensitivity tests indicate that cave ice would be stable over significant portions of the surface of Mars. Ice caves on Earth commonly occur in lava tubes, and Mars has been significantly resurfaced by volcanic activity during its history, includ...

Detection of Caves and Cave-bearing Geology on Mars

Overview: The objectives of the Earth-Mars Cave Detection Project is to identify regions on Mars likely to contain caves and/or cave-bearing geology through (1) the analysis of multispectral imagery from past and current orbital missions and other orbital assets (e.g., radar), and (2) the investigation of terrestrial analogs for the identification of associated thermal, and geosignatures. The p...

Southern Circumpolar Crater Ice Deposits on Mars

Introduction: Layered deposits at the poles of Mars are thought to preserve a record of past climatic conditions in up to 3 km of water ice and dust. Just beyond the extent of the south polar layered deposits (SPLD), dozens of impact craters in the heavilycratered southern highlands contain mounds of fill material. Many of these crater-filling deposits (CFDs) appear to be outliers of the main S...

Subsurface ice on Mars with rough topography

[1] High-latitude ground ice on Mars discovered by the Gamma Ray Spectrometer suite is thought to be thermally stable owing to the presence of vapor in the Martian atmosphere. However, local slopes can alter surface and subsurface temperatures substantially, and hence allow ground ice to persist at locations where it would otherwise be unstable. Global statistics of the topography of Mars are c...

Japan’s Exploration of Holes and Caves on the Moon and Mars – Uzume Project

Introduction: In 2009, deep-hole structures were discovered in the Moon’s Marius Hills (Fig.1), Mare Tranquillitatis, and Mare Ingenii in the images acquired by the SELENE cameras aboard Japan’s Selenological and Engineering Explorer (SELENE, nicknamed KAGUYA). They were very similar to several pits on Mars that were discovered in 2007 and reported as possible “skylights” opened on subsurface v...
